Hotels near the Zattere (for all piers)

Venice aerial photo

The Zattere is a pedestrian promenade that runs along the Dorsoduro side of the Giudecca Canal, which is the main channel for cruise ships that are going to or from the Venice cruise port. Midway along the canal are stops labeled "Zattere" for ACTV, Venice's public waterbus network, and Alilaguna (which operates airport boats between Marco Polo Airport and various points in the city center).

Alilaguna Blue Line stops at the Zattere on its way between Marco Polo Airport and the Marittima cruise terminals. The trip between the Zattere floating pier and the Marittima ship basin takes only 12 minutes and costs only a little more than a vaporetto fare, making it convenient to stay at a hotel near the Zattere if:

  • Your ship is arriving or departing from Marittima. (Large ships generally use Marittima; small and mid-size ships are more likely to use the San Basilio pier, which we discuss on page 4.)

  • You're coming from (or going to) Venice Marco Polo Airport.

The following hotels are convenient to Alilaguna's Zattere airport-boat stop:

  • Palazzo Veneziano signPalazzo Veneziano (4 stars)
This renovated historic building on the Zattere is only a short walk from the San Basilio cruise terminal (which is used by river vessels, small- to medium-size oceangoing ships, and hydrofoils that cross the Adriatic to Croatia). It has 84 rooms, some with Jacuzzis and/or canal views. Check guaranteed lowest rates, reviews, and availability:

  • Hotel Nani Mocenigo PalaceHotel Nani Mocenigo Palace (4 stars)
You won't need to cross any bridges to reach this wonderfully-situated hotel just inland from the Zattere. From the Alilaguna stop, the hotel is less than five minues away over level pavement. Check guaranteed lowest rates, reviews, and availability:

  • SHG Hotel Salute PalaceSHG Hotel Salute Palace (four stars)
The Salute Palace is a bit of a walk from the Alilaguna pier at Zattere (with several small bridges to cross), but once you're there, you'll be in the heart of Dorsoduro's upscale arts district. The hotel lies on a sunny canal, and an upscale restaurant--the Bistrò da Cici--is on the premises. Check guaranteed rates, reviews, and availability:

  • Hotel Pensione Calcina, VeniceHotel La Calcina (3 stars)

From the Zattere, you can reach the Belle Arti without crossing any bridges: Just bear left as you leave the Alilaguna pier and head down the wide cross street (Rio Terà Antonio Foscarini). Continue a block or so to the hotel, which is on the left side of the street. If you want to save money, try the Belle Arti's cheaper annex, the Domus Cavanis, across the street.

  • Hotel American DinesenHotel American Dinesen (3 stars)
We don't know how or when the Hotel American got its name, but if you're expecting a Hilton or a Travelodge, think again: The hotel occupies a 17th Century palazzo and has a completely Venetian decor. It overlooks a canal that runs between the Zattere and the Grand Canal; you'll need to cross one small bridge on your way to the hotel. Check guaranteed lowest rates, reviews, and availability:

  • Hotel Messner, VeniceHotel Messner (2 stars)
This hotel offers good value in an upscale neighborhood near the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and the Santa Maria della Salute Church.
