Erfurt Innenstadt

Warehouses from the 16th and 17th Centuries line the Waagegasse, or "Balance Lane," where traders passing through Erfurt were required to have their goods weighed, taxed, and offered for sale. This requirement was based on the Stapelrecht or "staple right" that the emperor Charlemagne had given the city in 805.

Take a close look at the building corners and door angles as you walk along the street, and you'll see how they were arranged to let wagons negotiate the tight turns.
